How to Backup Your Data

If your computer has viruses or cannot boot into Windows click here.
If you have Windows 95 or 98 click here.
If you have Windows ME or 2000 click here.
If you want to back up to CD or DVD and have XP or Vista click here.
Otherwise follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on Start->All Programs->Acessories->System Tools->Files and Settings Transfer Wizard(Windows Easy Transfer in Vista).
  2. Click on the next button.
  3. Click on the option "Old computer", then click on "Next".
  4. Select where you want to back up your files and click on "Next".
  5. If you want to transfer your existing settings to your computer once you reload click on the option "Both files and settings", otherwise click on "Files only".
    NOTE:
Transferring pictures, video, music, and other media on floppies will require a large amount of floppy disks as some digital cameras today can fill up a floppy with as little as 3 pictures. If you want to back up files this way be prepared with at least 100 floppies.
  6. Click on the "Next" button.
  7. Wait while windows collects your files and saves them onto the media of your choice.
  8. Once it is done click on the "Finish" button.
  9. Repeat this process on all screen names.
  10. Your files are now backed up. To restore them just go through the process again. Just click on "New computer" instead of "Old computer" in step 2.
Q&A:
Q: Why do you want me to back up my files this way and not just copy them to an external hard drive or the like?
A: This method saves space as the wizard will automatically compress the files while it backs them up. It will also pick up those stray files that you may not have saved in the "My Documents" directory.
